Bavaria Field Trip

19th -24th October 2026
ITINERARY
Day 1
- Arrival at MUC, driving to the Buglhof-Hotel in St. Englmar (about 1,5 h drive).
- Depending on arrival time, visit of the airport beaver territory.
- Dinner at Buglhof.
Day 2
- Presentation on beavers in Bavaria and beaver management.
- Followed by a tour to different beaver sites in the Bavarian forest, a hilly area with lots of dams (including the longest one so far with about 150 m) and to the Bavarian National Park.
Day 3
- Trip to the Danube floodplain, beaver sites at the Danube, in oxbows, and in gravel pits and ditches.
- In the afternoon Isar river nature conservation area with a beaver rescue hill.
- Meeting with a local major and beaver consultant in the afternoon.
Day 4
- Leaving the hotel at 9:00 (moving out), drive to Pförring, meeting with the water management authority of Ingolstadt (around 10:30) on water management issues and dike protection methods.
- After lunch meeting with the head of the county farmers association (around 14:00) in the field.
- Then (depending on time) “the end of a trapped beaver” in Karlshuld, Neuburg an der Donau, meeting with the local nature conservation administration, and Haus im MOOS (where beaver management in Bavaria began), visiting European bisons.
- Moving on to the Hotel Stadthof in Treuchtlingen (about 1,25h drive).
Day 5
- Looking at different beaver territories in Middle Frankonia. Guide will be Ulrich Meßlinger, a biologist who has been investigating the sites for more than 25 years.
Day 6
- Leaving for the airport. If time allows, we can look at the “Müller-museum” in Solnhofen (with some of the Archaeopteryx fossils), at a beaver site in the Isar forest north of Munich and visit the “airport beaver” right next to the airport (if not done on day 1 ) – living in a nice, but very noisy territory.
All points are open to changes depending on needs of participants.

Please note the following:
- A non-refundable deposit of £100 needs to be paid to secure your booking with the balance due 6 weeks before the trip.
- You will need to arrange and pay for your own flights, travel insurance, evening meals and drinks.
- Price includes all airport transfers and the mini-bus/coach transporting us between locations.
- Price includes accommodation and breakfast while on trip.
