ITINERARY

Day 1

  • Arrival at MUC, driving to the Buglhof-Hotel in St. Englmar (about 1,5 h drive).
  • Depending on arrival time, visit of the airport beaver territory.
  • Dinner at Buglhof.

Day 2

  • Presentation on beavers in Bavaria and beaver management.
  • Followed by a tour to different beaver sites in the Bavarian forest, a hilly area with lots of dams (including the longest one so far with about 150 m) and to the Bavarian National Park.

Day 3

  • Trip to the Danube floodplain, beaver sites at the Danube, in oxbows, and in gravel pits and ditches.
  • In the afternoon Isar river nature conservation area with a beaver rescue hill.
  • Meeting with a local major and beaver consultant in the afternoon.

Day 4

  • Leaving the hotel at 9:00 (moving out), drive to Pförring, meeting with the water management authority of Ingolstadt (around 10:30) on water management issues and dike protection methods.
  • After lunch meeting with the head of the county farmers association (around 14:00) in the field.
  • Then (depending on time) “the end of a trapped beaver” in Karlshuld, Neuburg an der Donau,
meeting with the local nature conservation administration, and Haus im MOOS (where beaver management in Bavaria began), visiting European bisons.
  • Moving on to the Hotel Stadthof in Treuchtlingen (about 1,25h drive).

Day 5

  • Looking at different beaver territories in Middle Frankonia. Guide will be Ulrich Meßlinger, a biologist who has been investigating the sites for more than 25 years.

Day 6

  • Leaving for the airport. If time allows, we can look at the “Müller-museum” in Solnhofen (with some of the Archaeopteryx fossils), at a beaver site in the Isar forest north of Munich and visit the “airport beaver” right next to the airport (if not done on day 1 ) – living in a nice, but very noisy territory.

All points are open to changes depending on needs of participants.
